The Art of Stability

When doing colour readings for my clients, I find more often than not that one of the challenges everyone faces is the issue of security and stability.

Whether it be in a relationship, our career/work environment or our physical/home environment, when our future seems uncertain, we easily lose confidence in ourselves.

We associate being “in control” with feeling as though we are secure and stable.

A few weeks ago I wrote about the In-between. This suspended time between where we were and where we are going often feels like shaky ground.

I realise this week that the Universe has a few more lessons to teach me about this In-between time as I continue to find myself In-between Homes with a dose of uncertainty about when I can settle into a new space (thanks to some official red tape issues). This physical connection to the concept of HOME is one that is felt deeply for me at an emotional level.  Stability is fleeting at best and security is wavering as I wait – sometimes patiently and sometimes not so patiently for the future to unravel it’s path in front of me.

This need for control – and knowing the outcome is seeping into every level and has me depleted, immobilised, and at times directionless.

And all clues to changing this situation point to the base chakra.  An energy centre within the body which helps us feel stable, secure and as though we belong.  It connects us physically to the world around us and when it is running at it’s optimum, it nurtures our most basic needs and desires – a sense of place, a sense of survival and ultimately the desire to be alive.

Of course without a strong base, there is no foundation to keep stability on any level above.

So what practical tips can we apply for strengthening the energy of our base chakra?

  • on a physical level, physical is in fact the key word. Connect to your body through movement and or touch – exercise is one of the best forms – but even following your breath in and out is great for movement connection.  In terms of connection through touch, getting a massage – or better still, try killing two birds with one stone by grabbing (literally) your partner/significant other and get a good work-out while upping the touch factor too!

  • get grounded – the base chakra is all about our connection to Mother Earth.  Get your shoes off and your feet in the grass/dirt/sand/sea whenever and wherever you can.

  • in terms of colour, red represents the base chakra – so try out some nail polish, those red shoes that you’re always a little too shy to wear – or anything red that gets you energised. Another colour to consider is brown – as it is the colour of stability and security. I find the best way to incorporate brown into your surroundings is to use natural items.  Think river pebbles and timber.

  • from a supportive crystal point of view – any of the red crystals – red jasper, brecciated jasper, garnet to name a few will all help to anchor you down to keep you grounded and feeling secure. Smokey quartz (brown in colour) is also a fabulous protective grounding crystal and a great way to introduce brown into your surroundings.

  • emotional release is a must – often when we are up in our heads – feeling stressed and not grounded, we think the best way through is just to clamp down on our emotions and keep them bottled up. While it may be necessary to “keep it together” at certain points in time, we cannot keep all of these feelings inside – denied any air-time and just swirling around in the perfect storm inside.  If like me, you are in the life long habit of keeping it together, it may be difficult to open the floodgates.  I find the best way is to watch a movie that I know is a tear-jerker – or listen to a piece of music that has that same affect on you.  At a time and a place convenient for you, you can let the emotions out – even if you are sobbing long after the movie/song is done, you are letting off some of that built up emotional pressure.

  • above all be compassionate with yourself. Don’t add to your stress by letting your inner critic beat you up over how you are handling the situation.  Breathe love into every part of your being.  Be kind to yourself.

I’d love to know if you have any other tips for seeing you through these times of uncertainty and instability.  As always your comments and ideas are inspiring to me so leave a comment below.

Now excuse me while I take my own advice and get ready to watch The Notebook (again) – gets me every time!

    • Thanks Katherine,
Glad it is helping you on your journey. Chakras are such amazing things – especially when we learn how to work with them instead of against. Thanks for stopping by. X

Hi Lisa, love all your tips – I love watching the breath, such a quick and easy way to feel more grounded – and so easy to forget about so thanks for the reminder ;). I have a pair of red undies I wear to help with my red chakra haha! I didn’t know about the brown colour though! Very interesting. Thanks for sharing! And yes the Notebook gets me every time too haha 🙂 xx
